The Evolution of Chromia Mainnet and the Q4 Asgard Upgrade
Chromia’s Mainnet is set to take its next major step forward in Q4 with the release of the Asgard Upgrade.
In this article, we’ll recap how we arrived here and briefly explore the new possibilities that Asgard will introduce. Let's dive in!
Chromia Mainnet: A Continuous Evolution
Chromia’s mainnet is a continuous evolution, from the MVP phase to where we are now. Each progression is a step forward in the same journey.
MVP Mainnet
In July 2024, Chromia launched its mainnet in the 'MVP' phase. This phase marked the introduction of Native CHR tokens and the establishment of our provider network. While our utilities and ecosystem were still emerging, it was an important milestone—the beginning of Chromia Mainnet.
From MVP to Mainnet (July-September 2024)
During the months following MVP Mainnet Launch, progress and improvements were made on several fronts:
- The stability of the provider network and core software was demonstrated.
- CHR withdrawals to EVM were integrated into our official wallet.
- Native Staking launched, allowing users to stake and delegate Native CHR on mainnet.
- Several ecosystem projects launched on mainnet, including the flagship game My Neighbor Alice.
In October, the 'MVP' label was dropped, signaling the transition to full mainnet functionality.
Chromia Mainnet: Where We Are Now
Today, Chromia’s core functionality is stable, and the focus has shifted to ecosystem growth. Key utilities like Filehub and dapps including Xoob, Fanzeal, and Chasm Network opML Database are live.
The Chromia Data and AI Ecosystem Fund is establishing a pipeline of new partnerships, and new additions to the ecosystem are becoming a regular occurrence. This momentum sets the stage for the next step - the Asgard Upgrade.
The Asgard Upgrade
Asgard, set for Q4, will be the first significant technical upgrade to Chromia’s mainnet. Unlike the gradual transition from MVP to mainnet, Asgard will happen in a single update, with all node providers upgrading their software simultaneously.
Similar to Ethereum upgrades like Byzantium and Constantinople, Asgard will introduce new capabilities while maintaining the existing chain. One of the key highlights is the introduction of Chromia Extensions, which will expand the platform’s functionality.
What Are Chromia Extensions?
Chromia Extensions are modular enhancements that add new features to the core blockchain. These tools give developers more options, from enhanced computation to better data handling. The first extension to roll out will be the Oracle Extension, which brings off-chain data directly onto Chromia blockchains.
DeFi projects will particularly benefit from the Oracle Extension, as it provides the real-time data feeds needed for price tracking and trading. However, the use cases go beyond DeFi—gaming, supply chain management, and multiple other sectors can all take advantage of oracles.
Chromia's Vision and the Role of Extensions
Chromia envisions a decentralized cloud with maximum flexibility for projects and a seamless user experience. Projects like My Neighbor Alice and Fanzeal are already showing Chromia’s potential as a dapp platform, while Chasm Network is an example of how Chromia’s relational architecture can be utilized as a data layer.
Chromia Extensions will build on our existing strengths - Rell’s efficiency, relational architecture and modular design - while introducing even more possibilities for developers. Over the coming months, we’ll share more about the new capabilities that Extensions will bring, strengthening Chromia’s position as an innovative blockchain platform.
The Asgard Upgrade and Chromia Extensions will help Chromia expand its reach and grow our ecosystem even further. Here’s to a productive Q4 and beyond!
